  • Creator Key Notes:   Kaja Jangaard

    Kaja Jangaard is an empathetic photographer, passionate about people and the natural world. By engaging emotionally in her practice, she establishes a connection with her subject matter to convey honest emotion in her imagery.  

    Personal response and purity shout quietly in her work. Strong yet understated, Jangaard is present in each of her images. Her photographic direction is not told and nor should it be; her open enquiry allows her to channel an instinctive selection of, and her own natural response to subject matter, simply by living,  truly looking and experiencing the amazing world that surrounds her.

    Jangaard's work exposes a technical admiration for a shallow depth of field, an appreciation of colour in the natural world, and the ability to capture atmospheric light to create a stunning series of images that personally resonate. 

    ICELAND follows the highly acclaimed body of work STATES, and is the second in an ongoing series of 'place portraits'.

  • I have always been drawn to desolate and rugged landscapes. I am fascinated by the aesthetic of a landscape that can be likened to Mars; the juxtaposition of bleak tones broken up by jagged lines of rock is, to me, beauty at its finest. I drove the Icelandic roads observing the landscape; a great sense of awe and wonder was felt for the surreal landscape.

    Capturing elements in a visually graphic way was paramount to this series. I obsessed over the fine details in every line that lead to the tip of each mountain, the ripples of water and the perfectly symmetrical reflections. Often left completely overwhelmed by the majestic beauty of the landscape, I honed my focus closer to textures of the land.

    I departed Iceland feeling whole. The country is fully sustainable by renewable energy sources and the landscape untouched by man. As a result, the Icelandic people I met were so hospitable and proud of their country. I felt honoured to take home a piece of their beauty.
