  • Daisy Daisy, is another work of which I am particularly proud. I set the task of introducing imagery as well as the text. This work is almost entirely based on the themes from the movie 2001 a space odyssey. This work is currently on show in Regents Street London in Quintessential brands. This work has received numerous praise from critics.

  • Brief Notes on the works in this exhibition  (in order of appearance).

  • Ode to Battys reverie was the second work in which a text quotation from a science fiction movie (Bladerunner) was used to illustrate the post modern philosophical concept of ‘the flattening of effect’.  This work was exhibited in Chelsea New York in 2013.

  • Aws4 request&x amz signedheaders=host&x amz signature=95866548f273ba32d6325270100739cf7b5c4f2a471b597722e3465745c42e55
  • This was the first true work that met the conceptual criteria of the post modernity hermeneutics series therefore ‘history repeats itself’ is the first true work in this series. The text used in the painting was a quotation from the movie 2001 a space odyssey which illustrate the concept of ‘flattening of effect’. This work was short listed for the griffin art prize in 2013.

  •  12 Steps Backwards was one of the first ‘text works’ that I made. It began as a creative visual brain-shower for a series of work that I was making in 2010 around the concept of societal and individual consumption. I revisited the work a year later and refined the text and imagery to become a piece in its own right, during the period where this work was left in progress I produced a series of work again that utilised text in the form of graffiti alphabets.

We live in a world of information overload; these works reflect this. This collection of paintings are constructed using text, dialogue and quotations from science fictions that identify, highlight and explore the ‘Flattening of Affect’*. These constructs then become the structure and mechanisms with which to explore new interpretations, meanings and conceptualizations through the painting processes, all of which confront and juxtapose the ‘Flattening of Affect’ of the text content itself.

    Mark Lloyd,  2016

    Flattening of Affect*

Flattening of affect is a scientific term describing a person's detachment and lack of emotional reactivity.

Used in the postmodern literature to describe technology's dehumanizing impact.

A key example is the movie 2001: A Space Odessy where the main characters lose their humanity whereas the computer HAL gains "his" © 2014 On Postmodernism.com
